The people of Laval, Québec and beyond are in mourning today after a city bus plowed into a daycare in the Montreal suburb leaving two children dead and six injured.

The bus driver, Pierre Ny St-Amand, was arrested and has since been charged with two counts of first degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, and assault with a deadly weapon causing bodily harm.

According to CBC, the incident took place at the Garderie Éducative de Sainte-Rose around 8:30 am, just after parents had dropped their children off for the day.

A neighbor who witnessed the crash said the bus had been going at least 30 km/h when it jumped the curb, and that when St-Amand got out, he "took off all his clothes" and screamed incoherently, as if he was "in another world."

Parents were quickly alerted and returned to the scene as good samaritans attempted to rescue children pinned underneath the bus and subdue St-Amand.

One child was pronounced dead at the scene, while another died in hospital. Six others were injured, with four requiring hospitalization. All have since been declared to be in stable condition.

St-Amand, who was also taken to hospital, appeared in court virtually from his bed while officers stood guard, though he said nothing. He is scheduled to return to court in person on February 17.

The news sent shockwaves through the community and the nation, with support pouring in from coast to coast.

"There is nothing more cruel than attacking our children," Québec premier Francois Legault said. "I keep thinking of the families and loved ones of the children who died, as well as those injured. I take this opportunity to highlight the work of the police, firefighters, paramedics and health personnel."

Legault added that he would be visiting Laval on Thursday to offer his support to those impacted by the tragedy.

He also declared that the flag outside the Assemblée Nationale would be flown at half mast out of respect for the victims.

"My heart is with the people of Laval today," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted. "No words can take away the pain and fear that parents, children, and workers are feeling – but we are here for you. I'm keeping everyone affected by this unfathomable, tragic event in my thoughts."
