On Friday afternoon, an 80-year-old was killed and two others were injured on a San Antonio sidewalk by pit bulls.
According to KSAT, the incident occurred just before 2 pm in the 2800 block of Delpha Street.
San Antonio firefighter who arrived on scene saw the 80-year-old man being dragged on the sidewalk by one of two pit bulls involved in the attack.
SAFD Chief Charles Hood said in a press conference that the ban was "completely bloody" as crews arrived.
"This is not something normal for us. We usually don’t show up and have to defend patients from animals or ourselves," Hood said.
Hood said that the firefighters were "fighting off these pit bulls with pickaxes and pipe poles to try to get to the patients," calling the first responders "very heroic."
The elderly man was given blood at the scene by first responders but later succumbed to his injuries.
One woman, who a police spokesperson said may have been in her 70s, was critically injured and a third victim was bitten in the hand. All three were taken to University Hospital.
Additionally, a fire captain was bit in the leg, but is ok, Hood said.
"Horrific scene, horrific for the people who experienced it and horrific for our firefighters that were part of this," Hood said.
Shannon Sims, Director of Animal Care Services, said that the animals have been taken into custody, clarifying that two of the three dogs in question were most likely Staffordshire Terriers, and that the dogs had previously been impounded in 2021 for another biting incident.
Sims added that the dogs are in ACS custody and will stay there until the completion of the investigation, upon which a determination would be made on where the dogs would go.
