Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg released a letter on Thursday pushing back against Rep. Jim Jordan and the Judiciary Committee for what he sees as unreasonable interference into his investigation into former president Donald Trump.
Bragg further said that his office would investigated Trump for having "engaged in violations of New York State penal law." This would stem from Trump's Saturday announcement that he expected to be arrested on Tuesday, March 21, after rumors leaked that Bragg was intending to indict him on criminal charges.
Bragg responded to House Republicans, saying: "Your letter dated March 20, 2023 (the ‘Letter’), in contrast, is an [unprecedented] inquiry into a pending local prosecution."
Bragg’s office said that the GOP’s letter "only came after Donald Trump created a false expectation that he would be arrested the next day, and his lawyers reportedly urged you to intervene. Neither fact is a legitimate basis for congressional inquiry." It is unclear if Jordan, or the House GOP, were contacted by Trump's attorneys.
If Bragg’s office were to comply with the request, they state, it would "interfere with law enforcement." Their office writes that the GOP's letter represents "unlawful incursion into New York’s sovereignty."
The letter did not provide any insight into the investigation or whether the grand jury will return an indictment against Trump. The grand jury was expected to meet this week to consider charges against Trump, but they were released Wednesday, and while they are expected to sit on Thursday, reports indicate that the grand jury will not discuss charges until next week.
Several witnesses, including former Trump attorney Michael Cohen and fellow lawyer Robert Castello, testified before the grand jury in recent days, leading to more speculation about the case.
A letter released from Cohen to Trump, written after the 2016 election, indicates that Trump, who is being investigated for improperly recording payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels through Cohen's office in the lead up to the election, indicates that Trump did not reimburse Cohen for those payouts.
If a grand jury brings charges against Trump after Bragg attempts to raise the charge of falsifying records from the misdemeanor to a felony, the DA’s Office will have an obligation to provide a significant amount of discovery from its files to the defendant so that he may prepare a defense, according to the document.
