On Tuesday, President Joe Biden formally announced that he would be running for re-election in 2024.

The 80-year-old career politician launched his campaign for a second term via Twitter, releasing a video demonizing his political opponents.

"Every generation has a moment where they have had to stand up for democracy. To stand up for their fundamental freedoms," Biden tweeted. "I believe this is ours. That's why I'm running for reelection as President of the United States. Join us. Let's finish the job."

In the video, Biden begins by highlighting the importance of Americans' personal freedoms, before warning that "MAGA extremists" are "lining up" to take them away. Over clips from the Jan. 6 riot and stills of Republicans such as Donald Trump, Gov. Ron DeSantis, and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Biden goes on to level a slew of accusations against his political opponents.

The remainder of the video centres around Biden's suggestion that the 2024 election will be a continuation of the "battle for the soul of America."

According to recent CBS polling, Democrats "accept" Biden's bid for re-election, but aren't "excited" about having him in office for a second term. The vast majority of respondents cited the president's age as a reason why he shouldn't run, with many arguing it was simply "time for someone new."

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
