Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that Ontarians aged 75 and over will be able to book appointments for their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine starting on Monday.

Appointments can be made on the Ontario government's booking portal. Those 60 and over will also be able to book appointments at pharmacies.

Premier Ford made the announcement as COVID cases in the province reach their highest point in weeks, as the province's health experts worry that they are approaching a "third wave." More than 1,700 cases were logged on Friday, the highest in 6 weeks.

Over 56,000 tests were completed in the 24-hour period, showing a positivity rate of 3.3 percent.

The announcement was made Friday from a pharmacy in Etobicoke, Ontario, as Ford was joined by provincial Health Minister Christine Elliott, and retired General Rick Hillier, current chair of Ontario’s COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Task Force.

Ford announced that the AstraZeneca vaccine would also be in use for Ontarians over the age of 60, something that has remained a point of controversy among countries in Europe.

Canadian health authorities have deemed the vaccine safe for use for those over 65.

Ford also said that an additional 350 pharmacies would be joining in the province's vaccine rollout, making 1,500 pharmacies able to administer vaccines by the end of April.
