Former President Jimmy Carter is undergoing hospice care after a "series of short hospital stays."

According to a statement from the Carter Center released Saturday, "After a series of short hospital stays, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention. He has the full support of his family and his medical team. The Carter family asks for privacy during this time and is grateful for the concern shown by his many admirers."

Carter, who was born in 1924, served as the 39th president of the United States after serving as the governor of Georgia state senator.

Hospice care is a quality-of-life treatment designed to alleviate pain and suffering as a patient nears the end of their life.

This story is breaking and will be updated.
