Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole said he would vote against MP Cathay Wagantall's private members bill, the Selective Abortion Act, though he did not answer if he would direct his shadow cabinet to vote with him on the bill.

Wagantall held a press conference earlier on Monday morning to discuss her private member's bill (C-233), that if adopted, would prohibit abortionists from proceeding with sex-selective abortions, usually done to avoid having a baby girl.

O'Toole, however, said he would vote against the bill: "I'm pro choice and I will be voting against this private members bill. I will always as pm defend the rights of all Canadians including Canadians to make this decision for themselves," he said on Monday.

84 percent of Canadian adults polled said abortion should be illegal for families who are going forward with the operation because of the baby's sex.

"Being pro choice means I will defend that right, and there will be no law passed that will restrict the rights of Canadians," O'Toole said.
