On Friday, Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene said she was receiving reports that January 6 detainees were being moved out of DC jails, following a demand from congressional GOP that they be allowed to inspect the condition of the facilities, as reports of "abuse and neglect" had emerged.

"What is the DC Jail trying to hide by moving pretrial J6 defendants out of the jail before we go in?" Greene wrote on Twitter and retweeted American Greatness writer Julie Kelly reporting that "that some J6ers being moved out of DC Gulag in advance of GOP investigation into conditions there."

In a letter from March 9, Republicans on the House Oversight Committee, including Greene and chair James Comer requested an inspection of the Department of Correctional facilities in DC where detainees charged with offenses related to January 6 were being held.

The letter was addressed to DC Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowers and contained accusations of abuse against those detained.

According to the letter, "Eyewitness accounts of conditions at the DC Jail Facilities — particularly regarding the treatment of January 6 detainees — paint a picture of despair, hopelessness, and a severe abuse of justice. No prisoner in the United States should be treated in this fashion."

In December 2021, Greene along with Representatives Louie Gohmert, Matt Gaetz, and Paul Gosar spoke about the conditions the January 6 defendants were being held under.

Greene said, "They have been beaten by the guards, they are called white supremacist. They are denied religious services, haircuts, shaving the ability to trim their fingernails. There's more outrageous things happening there. They're denied time with their attorneys. They are denied the ability to even see their families and have their families visit there. They are denied bail and being held there without bail."

Greene said that prisoners, for 22 to 23 hours per day, were held in solitary confinement and there was evidence of "abuse and neglect."

An unannounced inspection of the DC facility was conducted by a team of eight US Marshals from October 18- 23, 2022. The inspection occurred after a US District Court found that DOC Director Quincy Booth and Warden Wanda Patten violated a detainee’s civil rights.

During the preliminary review, the acting US Marshal concluded there was "evidence of 'systemic' mistreatment of detainees" and passed along the findings to the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.
