Cosmopolitan magazine published an article on Wednesday suggesting "100 Gender-Neutral Names for Your Future Heir," in an attempt to "break the very tired male-female binary."
The women's fashion and entertainment magazine includes names such as "Beck," "Sailor" and "Justice" in its list, claiming that sticking with traditional male and female names can make the already-stressful naming process harder.
"It's 2022—and more so than ever, people are engaging in open conversations about gender fluidity and actively working to break the very tired male-female binary. And that, naturally, includes baby names," the article begins.
Writers Niko Newbould, Megan Uy, Katherine J Igoe, and Annabel Iwegbue state that you can name a human baby "whatever name you want, no matter the sex they're assigned at birth."
"But if you don't want to think about whether or not your bundle of joy's name is viewed as more feminine or masculine (f*ck those norms, really), then you’ve come to the right place," the piece says.
The magazine rounds up 100 gender-neutral names that would "be perfect for your future angel on earth—no matter their gender," so that parents don't have to settle for a name that is "overused, dated, or potentially inauthentic."
"Yes, this is your cue to toss those outdated color-coded baby-name books that your mom dusted off from storage. Who reads baby-name books when Google exists, anyway?" the writers say. "Sorry to all baby-name book writers out there, but we have all the unisex baby names you need below."
In descending order, the Cosmo top 10 gender-neutral baby names are Justice, Beck, Harlowe, Flynn, Sailor, Tanner, Camden, Whitely, Valentine, and Atlas.
Each name comes with a short description of what makes this name special, for example, the "Atlas" recommendation says, "C’mon, baby global citizen! Here’s a unique and modern name for any gender."
Other less common names included further down the list include Blue, Rumi, and Halston.
