On Saturday, Lauren Windsor of the political reporting web-show The Undercurrent secretly recorded Arizona Republican Dave Schweikert during a "pro-family" event in Scottsdale.
Windsor's attempt to paint Schweikert's position on defunding the FBI and pardoning January 6 defendants as extreme backfired, with many pointing out that she had inadvertently created the Republican's next campaign ad.
"So my husband, his brother in law, was up at the Capitol on January 6," Windsor began, "and all the things they're doin' to these freedom fighters in the jail in DC. I think it's terrible and I'm just hoping that you guys are gonna fight for them to get pardons."
"We need to win the White House," Schweikert replied.
"So that can happen?" Windsor pressed. "If we have the White House, we can do that, but not 'til we win the White House?"
"If we have the White House, we can do that," Schweikert stated, adding that when it comes to the FBI, and the "witch hunts," he wanted Jim Jordan on the House Oversight Committee because that "every one of those documents from the FBI goes to his committee."
"Are you gonna hold them accountable?" Windsor asked. "Are we going to be able to defund the FBI?"
"You don't want to defund them," Schweikert explained, "you want to break them up, it's different. You wanna be able to ship out anyone that's political … because you're not going to be able to defund them."
When asked if they could defund the "witch hunts" and investigations, he said, "exactly."
"Can you impeach Chris Wray?" Windsor asked, referring to the director of the FBI.
"Sure, sure, sure, cool," he replied.
Schweikert explained that Wray was not the highest on his "to impeach" list, with DHS Secretary Mayorkas and Secretary of State Antony Blinken earning the top two spots. He suggested that the latter "has worked to open up Communist-Socialist governments around the world, and taking away American values around the world."
"You're doin' the Lord's work, you really are," Windsor said before walking away.
Following the event, WIndsor posted her footage on Twitter. While it received praise from Democrats, the Project Veritas-style mission was largely celebrated by Republicans as well, many of whom saw it as essentially a free campaign ad for Schweikert with the midterm elections just weeks away.
"This clip has everything," Jack Posobiec wrote on Twitter. "Republicans just want to protect babies and expose the FBI."
"Lauren Windsor posting GOP Ws," another user wrote.
"You seem to believe this … is some sort of 'gotcha', in reality, this could be a campaign ad," stated yet another.
