"It’s just another example of them weaponizing the justice system against him. And it’s sort of unfair," Trump's lawyer said.

Donald Trump's attorney has revealed that the former president has been invited to testify before a grand jury in New York, as a part of an investigation regarding what prosecutors allege are hush money payments made on his behalf during the 2016 election to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Prosecutors are nearing a decision on whether to pursue what could be the first criminal case against a former US president, according to the Associated Press.

Trump Lawyer Joseph Tacopina confirmed that the invitation was sent to Trump on Thursday from Manhattan District Attorney Alvain Bragg's office. He stated that he believed prosecutors had not yet made a decision on whether Trump will be charged. Tacopina called the investigation "much ado about nothing" and said that the legal basis on which prosecutors were building their case is weak, saying that they were unfairly using the justice system.

"It’s just another example of them weaponizing the justice system against him. And it’s sort of unfair," he said in a comment to AP.

Investigators are seeking charges over payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential race. The probe is investigating whether Trump made a $130,000 payment prior to the successful run. Prosecutors said that the money was given to keep Daniels quiet about a long-denied affair, according to the New York Times.

According to AP, invitations to testify before grand juries are often an indication that indictments are imminent.

This potential indictment would come as Trump continues on his 2024 presidential run.
