Darnell "Murder" McMiller, the alleged leader of the Black Disciples street gang in Chicago, was arrested on Tuesday following a federal government sweep in the south of Chicago.

McMiller is one of 23 who will be charged federally with drug and gun charges, the US Attorney's Office in Chicago stated on Wednesday.

The investigation would result in the seizure of "24 firearms, more than 13 kilograms of cocaine, more than a kilogram of heroin, approximately 1,350 grams of heroin laced with fentanyl, approximately 750 grams of fentanyl or fentanyl analogue, approximately 378 grams of crack cocaine, $52,595 in suspected illicit cash proceeds, and distribution quantities of suspected MDMA pills."

Others arrested include Clarence January, alleged leader of the "Dog Pound" faction of the gang, Kenneth Brown, who allegedly supplied the gang with drugs, and Charles Knight, who has been charged as part of the probe with supplying narcotics to the gang.

Darnell "Murder" McMiller was previously arrested during an investigation that kicked off in 2010, wherein state and federal agencies teamed up to dismantle Chicago-area drug trafficking rings.

That investigation saw the arrest of 8 Black Disciples, resulting in the seizure of "one handgun, 7 kilograms of powder cocaine, 1.3 kilograms of crack cocaine, 3.5 kilos of heroin, one car and $28,000 in cash," according to the Justice Department.

According to the Department of Justice, the Black Disciples are a "national street gang" that thrives in Chicago and surrounding neighbourhoods. The charges include more than 50 illicit transactions between the Black Disciples and law enforcement cooperators, who allegedly purchased guns from the gang.

Justice.gov states that the investigation "was led by the FBI and Chicago Police Department, with assistance from ATF, DEA, IRS Criminal Investigation Division, the Chicago High Intensity Drug Trafficking Task Force, and the FBI Windy City Task Force."
