Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman remains in Walter Reid hospital after having checked himself in for clinical depression, with his chief of staff posting photos of him on Monday.
Fetterman checked into Walter Reed nearly three weeks ago on February 16.
"Productive morning with Senator Fetterman at Walter Reed discussing the rail safety legislation, Farm Bill and other Senate business," Chief of Staff Adam Jentleson wrote in a tweet. "John is well on his way to recovery and wanted me to say how grateful he is for all the well wishes. He’s laser focused on PA & will be back soon."
Fetterman sought in-patient treatment for "severe" depression following a spell of dizziness on February 7. The Senator, 53, suffered a stroke while on the campaign trail in May 202.
In response to the photos, Fetterman's wife Gisele said, "Society's expectations and traditional gender roles play a part in why men are less likely to discuss or seek help for their mental health. As always, John continues to challenge the conversation. So human, so kind, so cute."
Gisele recently packed up and decided to "run away" with her kids to Canada for some "joy and fun" as her husband remained in hospital. She admitted that "I am not really sure how to navigate this journey but am figuring it out slowly. 1 week ago today when the news dropped, the kids were off from school and media trucks circled our home. I did the first thing I could think of … pack them in the car and drive."
"We drove straight into … Canada (and lovely Buffalo NY) (Pro Tip: always have passports ready just in case you have to run away ) We talked about lots of hard things and how we will all have to face hard things. About the need to be gentle … with all and with ourselves," she added.
She said, "We did some scary things but we did them together. We ziplined over Niagara Falls and August got stuck . We talked about flexibility and the need to always have an open heart and an open mind.
"We also talked about how joy and fun can and must still exist, even when someone we love is in pain. And tomorrow? Who knows. Will try all over again," she added.
John has had difficulty in his path to recovery. He still suffers from sensory processing issues and relies on computer technology to provide closed captions to him to be able to read along, in order for him to do interviews. One senior aide told NBC that it's difficult to tell if Fetterman is dealing with his stroke recovery or depression on any given day, noting that it's unclear if Fetterman is "not hearing you, or is he sort of crippled by his depression and social anxiety."
