On Tuesday, Mayor Adams said that the crisis at the US-Mexico border caused by the Biden administration's lax immigration policies has had a significant impact on the city of New York, calling it a "burden" for New Yorkers, Fox News reports.
"We are carrying this entire burden. This national problem is being laid in the lap of New Yorkers," Adams told Fox 5 New York on Tuesday.
"This is an unsustainable crisis that's been forced on New Yorkers and is going to continue to grow if there's not a real response at our border and if there's not assistance of a decompression strategy here in New York State."
The Adams administration has been struggling to find areas to house the illegal immigrants that are being bused to New York City at the hands of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) which forced the Mayor to sign an executive order earlier this week that exempts emergency shelters from abiding by the city's lengthy land-use procedures.
According to Fox News, all rules and regulations relating to the city's Uniform Land Use Review Procedure are suspended for the duration of the state of emergency, which includes having to apply for siting, leasing, construction, and operations of facilities.
The executive order removes the usual requirements of having to go through public hearings, certification of applications, the submission of recommendations, required or necessary voting, the taking of final actions, and the issuance of determinations, the outlet reports.
New Yorkers have been outraged with how the sanctuary state has decided to handle the illegal immigration crisis, which has had a direct impact on their personal lives.
On Tuesday, parents protested outside of PS 188 elementary school in Coney Island alongside their kids over Adams' decision to turn the school gymnasium into a temporary shelter for illegal immigrants.
"We support asylum seekers but not on school grounds," a large group of students chanted while holding signs that read, "We need recess."
However, this is just one of 20 schools that have been turned into makeshift shelters for the illegal immigrants that are overwhelming the city.
Following last week's expiration of Title 42, a Trump-era border policy that expelled illegal immigrants over health concerns, homeless veterans were evicted from hotels in Newburgh to make room for illegal immigrants.
Mayor Adams has been packing illegal immigrants residing in NYC onto buses and shipping them to Orange County and Rockland County in Upstate New York, specifically the city of Newburgh which has since declared its own state of emergency over the mass influx of illegal immigrants coming to their town.
On Thursday, Mayor Adams called on a judge to revoke the city’s sanctuary city law.
"The law of sanctuary city was in place long before I became mayor. I’m following the law. As a law enforcement person, you know, we follow the law," Adams said. "We are now in court now, today, asking the judge to revisit this law to deal with this humanitarian crisis because, even when they decided to put in place that law, no one thought they would be dealing with a humanitarian crisis of this proportion."
Both Mayor Adams and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul have declared states of emergency over the crisis at the US/Mexico border and have requested more than $1 billion in federal aid, along with military assistance.
