The Nabisco brand of sandwich cookies, Oreo, has become woke capital personified. In a post on Thursday, the cookie brand posted: “Trans people exist” in an act of performative wokeness in response to the Equality Act currently making its way through Congress.

The tweet was swiftly mocked on Twitter with many pointing out that the message is not only trite, but far from brave.

"The sky is blue," remarked podcaster Adam Crigler.

Under the so-called Equality Act, or H.R. 5, the US Congress is pushing through amendments to redefine “sex” under federal civil rights laws to include both “sexual orientation” and “gender identity.” The Wall Street Journal described the bill as “overriding basic biology.”

The debate has divided the House, as conservative representatives from the GOP denounced it as an imposition of progressive, far-left values that seek to redefine the gender binary as a spectrum of myriad sexualities and gender identities in varying configurations.

“The utter foolishness. It's astounding. Up is down. Wrong is right. Left is right. And boys or girls, and vice-versa. Madam Speaker, for the sake of our sons and daughters, for the sake of parental rights, privacy, decency, and so much more — I urge my college colleagues to vote no on this horrendous legislation,” said Rep. Lauren Boebert on Wednesday.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene also courted controversy when she put up a sign outside her office that read: “There are TWO genders: male & female. Trust The Science!” in apparent mockery of her congressional neighbor, Rep. Marie Newman’s transgender pride flag.
