In the days leading up to opening day at T-Mobile Stadium, home to the Seattle Mariners, a homeless man was found dead in his tent just outside. The executive director of We Heart Seattle Andrea Suarez found the body on March 28th.
The tent was located out in the open, a location where thousands of people walk past each day. According to Komo News he was a 54 year old man who died of natural causes.
We Heart Seattle is an orgainzation that is dedicated to helping the homeless in Seattle. They conduct wellness checks of as many of the cities homeless popluation each day. In this case reports show that he may have been dead for up to two weeks before Suarez found him.
The Seattle homeless situtation has been an ongoing issue for quite a few years. In 2020 the police's navigation team that was designated to monitor their homless camps was disbanded by the city council. Following the disbanding it was revealed that the Mayor at the time Jenny Durkan used the team as her personal security detail.
Since that time the situation has only gotten worse. It is estimated that over 13,000 people are living on the streat according to the cities Point-in-Time report in March of 2022. Even as the city spends billions of dollars on "harm reduction," fentynol overdose is a leading cause of death among the Seattle homeless, and crime continues to run rampant within these camps.
