Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the Liberals are looking at cementing the right to a safe abortion in Canada.

Trudeau spoke to reporters on Thursday before their caucus meeting. The prime minister said that the minister of health and the status of women are currently examining Canada's existing laws around abortion to ensure that women will be able to receive an abortion under future governments.

The Liberals had promised during the last federal election in 2021 that they would introduce legislation under the Canada Health Act to ensure abortion services were clearly medically necessary through public funds.

Trudeau's statement comes as conversations on abortion heat up again after a draft decision from the US Supreme Court that would overturn Roe v Wade, which allows for abortions to be conducted in every state as per federal law.
