President Donald Trump took to Twitter tonight to state that he "will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration to the United States."

He wrote that this suspension was "In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens."

The reason given for the cessation of immigration is the global coronavirus contagion. The US currently has almost 800,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, with 72,368 recovered and nearly 43,000 deaths.

Immigration has been a pervasive theme in Trump's presidency, and many of his supporters were in favour of his plan to build a wall between Mexico and the United States, in order to curb illegal immigration.

However, the practice that Trump is now planning to temporarily stop is that of legal immigration to the US.
