An off-duty Vermont sheriff's deputy was shot early on Sunday morning by police in the city of Saratoga Springs, the New York Post reports.

The incident began with a heated argument between the deputy and a small group of men on the street. The men shoved him into a parked car and then threw him to the ground.

He then allegedly picked himself up off the ground, brushed himself off and brandished his firearm. This was followed by an exchange of gunfire, which drew the attention of nearby police officers.

When the officers approached the scene, they saw the deputy holding his gun. After repeated demands by the officers that the deputy drop his gun, they opened fire.

Bodycam footage released by the city shows that officers demanded at least eight times that he drop his weapon, but the deputy never let go.

"By my count, there are at least eight separate, clear, unequivocal commands to put the gun down and get on the ground," Saratoga Springs Public Safety Commissioner James Montagnino said at a press conference. "They are all ignored."

The deputy suffered ten bullet wounds, but according to Montagnino, "at this point, they haven’t been segregated into exit and entry wounds, so that doesn’t mean he was shot ten times [by police]."

He was taken to the hospital and is listed as being in stable condition.

Two others were injured by gunfire, including a woman believed to be the deputy's girlfriend and a man from the Utica area who was invloved in the initial dispute.

Prior to this incident, Saratoga Springs police department hadn't discharged their weapons in 26 years.

As the city starts to welcome visitors in the runup to Thanksgiving, police have requesested that all local bars wand their patrons to check for firearms in order to boost public safety, according to The Daily Gazette.

New York state police are investigating the incident alongside Saratoga Springs police. As of Monday morning no charges have been filed.
