Liberal Twitter bluechecks outraged over Biden meme, but ignore Kathy Griffin's death threat

The hypocrisy is staggering, but it also illustrates an important fact that the internet has proven time and time again: the left can't meme.

A meme about Joe Biden went viral recently, prompting left-wing journalists to call upon the Secret Service to take down the creators of the video because they thought it was a "death threat."

The apparent reason for all the outrage is that the video, created by Daily Caller reporter Jordan Lancaster and TPM's own Ian Miles Cheong, depicted Joe Biden's presidential campaign in a coffin. But many took this to mean that the creators advocated for putting Biden himself in a coffin.

The meme followed Biden telling black people they "ain't black" if they do not vote for him late last week while interviewed on The Breakfast Club—a popular podcast run by Charlemagne tha God.

This quickly ballooned into what much of what left-wing Twitter bluechecks perceived as being racist on the part of the creators, and even called upon the Secret Service to get involved.

Jared Yates Sexton took to Twitter yesterday to let his feelings out about the situation, typing: "I just watched this and it is one of the most racist and despicable things I've seen on the internet. There are so many times where I think I'll get to the point where I can't be surprised by Donald Trump's [sic] and how disgusting he is, and then he inevitably finds a way."

But what's interesting is that Kathy Griffin literally advocated for someone to stab President Donald Trump with an air-filled syringe, which can be deadly if it gets in the bloodstream.

These same Twitter bluechecks have been mysteriously silent on her behaviour. They would rather cry over a meme than deal with actual incitement to violence.

We reached out to Ian Miles Cheong, who collaborated with Jordan Lancaster on making the meme, and asked him about the fact that blue-check journalists were outraged by the meme but remain silent on Griffin's death threat. "I expect it. It doesn't surprise me. It exposes their outrage for what it is: fake as hell," Cheong said.

"I think it's funny when liberals feign outrage over a meme they'd otherwise have no problem with if it came from their side of the aisle. That said, I was very pleased to find that leftists (as in, Bernie supporters) enjoyed the meme as much as anyone on the right did. It's no surprise that they have a sense of humour and don't act like they have a stick up their ass or think Lena Dunham is the best thing since sliced bread."

Lancaster, Cheong's partner-in-memes, concurred: "The fact that they suggested the Secret Service get involved when the president posted a popular meme is laughable. But the fact that they did that and acted horrified over the Biden meme but stayed silent about Kathy Griffin just proves they don't actually care and are probably just mad that the right is funnier than they are. If they want to call the Secret Service on a random 21 year old girl for making memes with her friends then go right ahead. I'm sure the Secret Service will think the video is hilarious too."

The hypocrisy is staggering, but it also illustrates an important fact that the internet has proven time and time again: the left can't meme.
