Zelensky demands more US 'support' from McCarthy moments after he's elected House Speaker

"We're counting on your continued support and further U.S. assistance to bring our common victory closer," Zelensky said in his congratulatory message to McCarthy.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday congratulated newly-elected Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy and then begged for more foreign aid from the US.

"Congratulations to @GOPLeader on his election as the Speaker of [the United States] House of Representatives," the Ukrainian politician said almost immediately after the Republican leader got the votes he needed from fellow representatives late Friday night. "U.S. support in all fields has been vital for [Ukraine's] success on the battlefield."

"We're counting on your continued support and further U.S. assistance to bring our common victory closer," he added.

Zelensky, who addressed Congress last month to make yet another bid for more money, has already secured over $100 billion from the US for his country, with the Kiel Institute for the World Economy's Ukraine Support Tracker reporting $54.43 billion already sent and an additional $47 billion on its way as part of the end-of-year federal spending bill.

In his December 20 address, Zelensky thanked Congress for spending American taxpayer's money to fund his war, before saying "Is it enough? No, not really." Congress chuckled, appreciating his ask for even more US dollars and weapons.

After 15 rounds of votes, McCarthy, who represents California's 20th district, finally secured the support he needed to win the speakership position. While Democrats were aligned behind New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the GOP had a significant portion of representatives, predominantly led by Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz and Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert, who opposed McCarthy.

What was originally 20 dissenting Republicans became 8, with McCarthy making concessions and compromises for votes.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida took to Twitter to share some of the promises that were made, including a "Church" style committee that would allow for an investigation into agencies like the FBI being weaponized against American citizens.
