A new Scripps News/Ipsos poll shows that the majority of Americans favor the mass deportation of illegal immigrants, a policy that has been proposed by 2024 GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump.

The policy was supported by 54 percent of respondents, with 86 percent of Republicans, 58 percent of independents, and 25 percent of Democrats indicating that they "strongly" or "somewhat" support it, according to the poll.

A total of 39 percent of respondents nationwide said that immigration was the top issue in this election, with inflation topping the list at 57 percent. Trump holds a ten-point advantage against Harris (44 percent to 34 percent) in the opinion of respondents regarding who would be more effective in managing immigration, poll data shows.

Approximately one-third of Americans say securing the US-Mexico border should be the nation's top priority, followed by a pathway to citizenship for those who qualify (20 percent), deporting those here illegally (18 percent), and ensuring opportunities remain for those trying to legally enter the country (18 percent).

When it comes to the threat of non-citizens voting in the 2024 election, 83 percent of Republicans consider it a concern, while 46 percent of independents and 24 percent of Democrats share the concern, as per the survey.

However, there are areas in which there is consensus among both parties. A pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who arrived in the country as minors is supported by nearly 90 percent of Democrats and 52 percent of Republicans.

Additionally, 88 percent of Republicans and 55 percent of Democrats support the implementation of policies that restrict the number of those who are eligible to apply for asylum.

The poll was conducted between Sept. 13 and Sept. 15 and surveyed 1,027 American adults. The margin of error is +/- 3.6 percentage points.
