Windsor police said Monday's shutdown and subsequent investigation into the Ambassador Bridge international border crossing produced no criminal charges after the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) found possible explosive devices in a vehicle.

At around 9 am Monday, patrol officers, along with the Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU), dispatched to the 2600 block of Wyandotte Street West to report they uncovered two grenades inside the vehicle. Police said the grenades were submerged in "an unknown white powdery substance," reported CTV News.

Upon the discovery, patrol officers evacuated the immediate area and placed the vehicle driver in CBSA custody before the police arrived. They cordoned off several roads and ensured adequate distance from any potential threat.

The EDU used a robot for the initial investigation stage and obtained samples of the powder for testing. Another EDU member attended to the vehicle and safely secured the grenades.

They conducted a thorough search of the car until law enforcement felt completely satisfied with no other threats. Police later confirmed no other persons were involved and that no threats were made to anyone or any place precisely.

They also determined the powder was not hazardous, nor did it contain explosive properties, and that the grenades were inert. In a statement, Windsor Police said, "the investigation revealed that there was no intent to cause harm or use the grenades for any nefarious purpose. The grenades were inert, as such, not subject to any criminal charges being laid."

The investigation subsided around 4 pm Monday, and traffic resumed in the area. Law enforcement cleared the scene entirely and resumed regular bridge operations around 6 pm.

The CBSA then returned the unnamed, US-based adult male driver to the US and turned him over to US Customs and Border Protection custody without incident.
