President Biden is reportedly planning to run for reelection in 2024, setting up a likely face-off between his 2020 opponent, former President Donald Trump.

Speaking with The Hill, two sources said that Biden has told former President Barack Obama that he is planning to run for reelection.

"[Biden] wants to run and he’s clearly letting everyone know," one of the sources familiar with the conversations told The Hill.

That sources noted that Biden may be the Democratic candidate most likely to defeat Trump, despite his plummeting ratings.

"I believe he thinks he’s the only one who can beat Trump. I don’t think he thinks there’s anyone in the Democratic party who can beat Trump and that’s the biggest factor," the source said.

In addition to his low approval rating, questions have been raised in regard to Biden’s age.

Taking office at 78 years old, Biden is the oldest president elected into office. He would be 82 if elected to a second term.

A CNBC poll released last week found that just 38 percent of Americans approve of Biden’s job performance. A FiveThirtyEight average of recent polls placed Biden’s approval rating at just under 42 percent.

With Biden receiving a low approval rating in terms of his handling of the economy, which has seen skyrocketing inflation and consumer prices, some economists have expressed a more hopeful outlook on the economy soon which could place Biden in a better situation for the presidential election.

"He can recover," Basil Smikle, a Democratic strategist and director of Hunter College’s public policy program, told The Hill. "A lot will depend on the outcome of the midterms. If Democrats don’t fare very well, he’ll be going into 2024 from a position of weakness, if you will."

In a recent interview with Politico, Biden 2020 pollster John Anzalone said that Biden would be the only candidate to win against Trump in a rematch.

"You go head-to-head and Joe Biden’s always ahead of him. Not by a lot — 1 or 2 points. People don’t want the chaos," Anzalone told the Politico. "Even at his lowest approval rating, he still beats Donald Trump."
