The latest data made available by Johns Hopkins University indicates that the number of 2021 coronavirus deaths in the United States surpassed last year's total.

According to the data, the United States has reached at least 770,691 COVID-19 deaths over the full course of the coronavirus pandemic. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that the total number of deaths involving COVID-19 in 2020 was 385,343, which means that at least 385,348 COVID-19 deaths—15 more than the 2020 total—have been recorded in 2021.

That number is expected to rise in the weeks to come in the remaining year.

Back in 2020, former President Donald Trump was blamed by many top Democratsfor the COVID-19 deaths that occurred under the previous administration. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) dubbed dubbed COVID-19 the "Trump virus" over the former president's handling of the pandemic.

Top medical journal New England Journal of Medicine published a scathing editorial ahead of the 2020 presidential election condemning the Trump administration and demanding that Americans vote Trump out of office.

CNN appeared to have changed its tune on what authority the president has to overrule state governors in regards to COVID-19 mandates, when comparing partisan coverage of President Joe Biden to that of Trump.
