The suspect accused of attacking an Asian man with a hammer in a New York City subway station has been charged with hate crimes.

On Tuesday night, a 29-year-old Asian man was attacked with a hammer at a 14th Street subway station. The attack was committed by a biological male who identifies as woman.

The suspect, 48-year-old Christian Jeffers, has since been arrested and charged with numerous hate crimes.

According to the New York Post, an argument broke out between Jeffers and the victim after they bumped into each other in the subway station. Jeffers then took a hammer out of a purse and bashed the victim's head.

"He ended up bumping into me," the victim said, "and then after that, he turned around trying to get into my face pretty aggressively, and in that kind of process he ended up stepping on me. He stepped on my foot and then after that, he took out the hammer and then I was hit on the head."

The victim was treated at Bellevue Hospital.

Jeffers fled the scene, and was caught the following day after allegedly jumping a turnstile at another subway station. A hammer was found in Jeffers' possession, and Jeffers was taken into custody.

As the Post reports, Jeffers "made a scene" as police escorted Jeffers into Manhattan central booking, accusing the cops of pushing.

Jeffers was subsequently charged with assault, aggravated harassment and menacing, all hate crimes.

This is not Jeffers' first brush with the law. Jeffers has been arrested forty-seven times, and was recently released from prison after serving six years for second degree robbery.

The victim, who has chosen to remain unidentified, told the Post following the incident that he was fed up with rising levels of crime and "unnecessary conflict" in the city.
