Buckingham Palace has announced Prince Philip, husband to Queen Elizabeth II, has died. The pair were married in 1947, five years before Elizabeth took the throne, and he was 99 years old. The Palace said that his passing was peaceful.

"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh," Buckingham Palace said. "His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."

Prince Philip, born on Corfu in 1921, was the son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice, who daughter of Lord Louis Mountbatten and a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, according to the BBC.

Together, the Queen and prince had four children, and eight grandchildren. He is father to Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, born 1948, Princess Royal, Princess Anne, born 1950, the Duke of York, Prince Andrew, in 1960 and the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward, in 1964.

Prince Philip had fought in World War II, and was remembered by Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Speaking from Downing Street, the prime minister said that he "inspired the lives of countless young people."

"He helped to steer the Royal Family and the monarchy so that it remains an institution indisputably vital to the balance and happiness of our national life."

It was "with great sadness" that he heard the news, Johnson said, noting that "Prince Philip earned the affection of generations here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth, and around the world."

From his  military service, Johnson said, Prince Philip "took an ethic of service that he applied throughout the unprecedented changes of the post-War era."

"Like the expert carriage driver that he was, he helped to steer the Royal Family and the monarchy so that it remains an institution indisputably vital to the balance and happiness of our national life."

Prince Philip had recently been hospitalized for a month, and had returned home in March.
