President Joe Biden has invited Ralph Yarl, a 16-year-old high school student who was recently shot, to the Oval Office once he recovers from his injuries.
The president tweeted Tuesday that he had spoken with Yarl and his family, extending the invitation to meet with him personally. Vice President Kamala Harris also expressed her support and concern for Yarl via Twitter.
"Last night, I had a chance to call Ralph Yarl and his family. No parent should have to worry that their kid will be shot after ringing the wrong doorbell," Biden tweeted on Tuesday. "We've got to keep up the fight against gun violence. And Ralph, we'll see you in the Oval once you feel better."
The incident occurred when Yarl attempted to pick up his siblings from a friend’s house and mistakenly drove up to the wrong home.
The homeowner, Andrew Lester, fired shots at Yarl, claiming he thought someone was trying to break into his home. Yarl was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, including a gunshot wound to his head and another to his upper right arm.
Yarl has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home, Lester has been charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action.
While Yarl has been invited to the White House, the family members of those who were fatally shot during the Covenant School shooting in Nashville have yet to have such an invitation extended.
