Authorities are responding to a train derailment that occurred just outside of Detroit in the Van Buren Township, with at least six train cars coming off the track.
According to WXYZ, officials say that only one car was carrying hazardous materials. That train car is reportedly showing no signs of damage or leakage.
Police stated that there are no injuries, and that the area is not considered a hazmat situation, Fox 2 reported.
The Van Buren Township Fire Department has stated that the derailment poses no threat to the public at this time, but would cause traffic delays.
In a statement, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell said, "My team and I have been in touch with Supervisor Kevin McNamara, the Van Buren Fire Department, and other local officials regarding the train derailment in Van Buren Township."
"We are also in touch with the relevant federal authorities, including the EPA. At this time no one is aware of the release of any hazardous materials, the car carrying hazardous material has been put upright and is being removed from the area of the other derailed cars, and EPA is dispatching a team to ensure public safety. We will continue to monitor the situation very closely and remain in touch with federal, state, and local officials, and release additional information as it becomes available," the statement added.
The derailment comes nearly two weeks after the derailment of a Norfolk Southern train in East Palestine, Ohio, which was carrying vinyl chloride, among other chemicals. To avoid an explosion, officials decided to burn off the chemicals, resulting in a plume of smoke seen for miles. While residents that were evacuated have been able to return, they have raised concerns about the remaining chemicals in the air and water supply.
A derailment was also seen in Enoree, South Carolina earlier this week, as well as one outside of Houston, Texas, which was caused by a semi-truck crossing the tracks. The driver was killed, with police stating that no lights or crossing barriers were installed at the track crossing.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
