Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will invoke the Emergencies Act following late night meetings with his caucus, several sources report.

According to the CBC, Trudeau told his caucus last night that the measures would be put into place to handle protestors across Canada.

The invoking of the act comes after three consecutive weekends of protests in the city of Ottawa’s downtown core.

The Emergencies Act "is an act of the Parliament of Canada to authorize the taking of special temporary measures to ensure safety and security during national emergencies. It is considered to provide "the stiffest government emergency powers of any emergency law in Canada."

It has never been used since its creation, having replaced the War Measures Act in the 1980s.

According to the CBC's Travis Dhanraj, there are still no plans to deploy the military, and that the Act would be invoked were so that the provinces could have more power to deal with protests.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
