President Donald Trump has paused the tariffs on Mexico after speaking on Monday to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. This comes after Trump signed off on an executive order over the weekend to implement the tariff.

Trump posted to Truth Social, "I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States. These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country."

He added, "We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico. I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a 'deal' between our two Countries."

Sheinbaum also posted about the conversation on X that President Doanld Trump has agreed to pause tariffs for a month on Mexico as it takes steps to reinforce its border with the United States.

Sheinbaum posted on X in Spanish, translated to English, “We had a good conversation with President Trump with great respect for our relationship and sovereignty.” She added that 10,000 Mexican troops will be used to reinforce the border and that the US is “pausing tariffs for one month from now.”

Over the weekend, Trump signed executive orders to impose tariffs on Mexico, Canada, as well as China. The president had threatened to do so over the amount of illegal immigration as well as fentanyl flowing into the United States over the northern and southern borders.

After Trump signed the orders on the tariffs, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the country would implement retaliatory tariffs on good from the United States. He and Trump are expected to speak later on Monday.
