British scientists have warned that two doses of the coronavirus vaccine are less effective at stopping the new Omicron and Delta variants, according to the BBC.

These scientists then went on to say that a third booster shot would significantly improve protection to around 75 percent. Having said that, the UK government has stated that two doses would protect the infected from severe COVID.

Scientists came to this conclusion after examing over 500 separate cases of the new variant. Before this, governments have been deeply concerned that the new variant would damage the protection that vaccines offer.

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine which a significant number of UK citizens received has a particular weakness to the new variant. This was also the case with the  Pfizer vaccine.

Having said this, a third booster shot is said to improve protection to 70 to 75 percent for people who had these vaccines.

UK health services have suggested that there could be a million infections of the new variant by the end of December.

"These early estimates should be treated with caution but they indicate that a few months after the second jab, there is a greater risk of catching the Omicron variant compared to Delta strain," said a top UK health official.
