A veteran of the Capitol Police force has killed himself on Sunday in the wake of the Capitol riots. His suicide follows the passing of another police officer who died of his injuries a day following the attack on the US Capitol Building.

Howard Liebengood took is own life at age 51. He was a 15-year veteran of the department.

According to the New York Post, the details surrounding Liebengood's suicide remain unclear, but the most probable reason would have to do with the events of the past few days. It's also not clear if Liebengood was on duty at the time of the riot.

The Capitol Police itself is under intense scrutiny because of how easy it was for people to breach security and forcibly enter the grounds on Wednesday. The former chief of the department has resigned amid the scandal.

Liebengood's fellow officer Brian Sicknick was killed in the events of Wednesday. He was repeatedly pepper-sprayed and was hit in the head with a fire extinguisher. Other officers were injured during the chaos.

The Capitol Police issued a press release that reads:

"The United States Capitol Police is deeply saddened by the off-duty death on January 9, 2021, of Officer Howard Liebengood, age 51.  He was assigned to the Senate Division, and has been with the Department since April 2005.   Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and colleagues."

"We ask that his family, and other USCP officers’ and their families’ privacy be respected during this profoundly difficult time."
