It appears unlikely that Goodell will support the fund, given his rivalry with Portnoy.

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy is challenging NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to donate $250,000 to his small business relief fund.

The tweet is contextualized by an incident in May of this year where the NFL held an auction whereby the highest bidder would be able to watch a football game with the commissioner. The money would have been donated to support frontline healthcare workers.

When Portnoy was revealed to have placed the winning bid, however, the NFL rejected his money and refused to award him the prize, citing incidents of trespassing during Portnoy's protest of the deflategate scandal.

"We knew it was going to happen. You have cowards, you have mega-cowards and then you have Roger Goodell," Portnoy said at the time.

Now Portnoy, who has founded a relief fund to help struggling small businesses shuttered due to coronavirus-related restrictions, is telling Goodell that he will donate $250,000 of his own money to the fund if Goodell does so as well. It appears unlikely that Goodell will support the fund, however, given his rivalry with Portnoy.

The fund has already raised over $4 million to support small businesses.
