Canadian icon Don Cherry has republished an old video where he explains to the Canadian public why it's important to wear the poppy.

Throughout his career, Cherry has been a vocal proponent of the poppy. Cherry is from a family of veterans and has always been keen to remember the sacrifices of the Canadian armed forces.

In the video that was initially published on YouTube, Cherry said "everybody should have a poppy. When I see people walking along the streets not wearing a poppy, I wanna give people a smack."

Cherry then spoke about his grandfather who fought in Vimy Ridge, calling it "the greatest battle Canadians have ever fought." Cherry detailed the horrors of the battle, telling Canadians quite simply that they should "buy a poppy!"

In a slightly more modern clip, Cherry castigated his former co-host, Ron MacLean, for not wearing a poppy, then said he "never saw poppies in downtown" Toronto. "For crying out loud, at least buy a poppy," said Cherry.

In a final clip, Cherry showed a picture of Canadian soldiers who were all killed in World War One. "All I'm asking is to buy a poppy and think about" the soldiers.

In 2019, Cherry was fired from his long-held position on Coaches Corner for saying that "you people, you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple of bucks for a poppy or something like that," Cherry said.

"These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price," he added.

Cherry was accused of singling out immigrants in Toronto. The Sportsnet network said that "during the broadcast, [Cherry] made divisive remarks that do not represent our values or what we stand for."
