Phillip Adams, a former player for the NFL, has been found dead in an apparent suicide early on Thursday morning, after he apparently went on a shooting spree that left three adults and two children dead.

The string of incidents occurred in the Charlotte suburb of Rock Hill, South Carolina between Wednesday afternoon and just after midnight on Thursday, which is the time of death officially established for Adams.

According to local outlet KTLA, Adams had a career in the NFL during the years 2010 to 2015, where he played for various teams, but was almost never a starter. He suffered an ankle injury in 2010 which greatly reduced his long-term prospects as a football player.

A spokesperson for the York County Sheriff's office stated:

"We have found the person we believe is responsible and we are with him at this time and that’s all I can say about the suspect. We are currently at his house and we are serving a search warrant."

Dr. Robert Lesslie and his wife Barbara, were found dead at the scene of the crime, along with two of their grandchildren, Adah and Noah, all of Rock Hill. James Lewis of Gaston, North Carolina, was also found dead just outside the home. A sixth unidentified person was found near Lewis and was rushed to hospital. This person is currently in serious condition.

Continued the spokesperson: "Dr. Lesslie was my doctor growing up. Dr. Lesslie has been one of those people that everybody knows. He started Riverview Medical Center in Rock Hill and it’s been a staple in Rock Hill for years."

It appears that Adams new Lesslie and had been treated by him before.
