500 doses of the coronavirus vaccine held at the Aurora Medical Center in Grafton, Wisc. were discarded after they allegedly deliberately spoiled by an employee of the hospital, ABC6 reports.

The hospital originally believed that the vaccine doses were left out accidentally when they were first discovered on Saturday. Now an employee has been fired for apparently intentionally leaving them out.

Aurora released a statement claiming that the employee admitted to spoiling the vaccine, stating that the employee "acknowledged that they intentionally removed the vaccine from refrigeration."

"We continue to believe that vaccination is our way out of the pandemic. We are more than disappointed that this individual's actions will result in a delay of more than 500 people receiving their vaccine," the statement further reads.

The coronavirus vaccine is unusual because of the requirement that it be stored under below freezing temperatures which requires special refrigeration. Leaving the vaccine out at room temperature, or even ordinarily cold temperatures, causes the vaccine to spoil.

The Aurora Medical Center said that the person responsible has been fired and referred to law enforcement for investigation. No motive has been established for the intentional destruction.
