A Kansas bill has recently passed that will ban people from changing the name or gender on their driver’s license, as well as require people to use the restroom that corresponds to their biological sex.
The bill managed to pass through the Senate with a 28-12 vote, overcoming the two-thirds majority required to overturn a veto. The Daily Mail reported that the Senate bill's passing gives final clearance for an "earlier House-passed version," sending it to Democrat Governor Laura Kelly's desk.
The recent move made by Kansas is just another among hundreds of Republican efforts aimed at rolling back trans-identified entitlements that have seen men being allowed to invade women’s spaces. The LGBTQ community is apparently suggesting the new bill would eliminate transgender people and “deny recognition to non-binary, gender fluid and gender non-conforming people,” per the report.
The bill came the same day that Florida’s Senate passed a bill that is set to make it illegal to conduct transgender treatments for minors. Republican state Senator Clay Yarborough said the following last month about the piece of legislation: "This legislation sends a strong message that Florida is a safe place to raise children. As the father of four young boys, I know that childhood is as special as it is short. Florida parents are worried about the radical, prurient agenda that has become pervasive across most forms of media, specifically targeting young children."
The Kansas bill will apply to jails, prisons, rape crisis centers, domestic violence centers, and any facility where safety, biology, or privacy require separate facilities based on biological sex. The bill officially defines sex as the biological sex that was given to an individual at birth.
Brenda Landwehr, House Health Committee Chair, said that the bill “will protect women’s spaces currently reserved for women, and men’s spaces.”
The bill has also made special provisions for those who are considered intersex: people are born with genitalia, chromosomes, or reproductive organs that are not typically associated with traditional definitions of male and female, per the report.
Kelly has vetoed a bill that would ban trans-identified women from competing in women’s sports. She has done so the past three years.
