Broward County Public Schools, the second-largest school district in Florida, is reversing its mask mandate that it announced last week after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis threatened withholding state funds from the district.

In compliance with an executive order signed by DeSantis on Friday, Broward County Public Schools on Tuesday removed its mask mandate from its 2021/2022 school year protocols.

According to the executive order, "if the State Board of Education determines that a district school board is unwilling or unable to comply with the law, the State Board shall have the authority to, among other things, withhold the transfer of state funds, discretionary grant funds, discretionary lottery funds... and declare the school district ineligible for competitive grants."

"Broward County Public Schools intends to comply with the Governor's latest Executive Order," the school district wrote in a statement.

The school district added that they would still advocate for everyone eligible to get vaccinated, as well as strongly encouraging everyone to wear masks.

On July 28, the school district had mandated masks in response to updated guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stating that children returning to schools should wear masks.

In addition, the school district will observe three feet of physical distancing, offer voluntary COVID-19 testing, and will continue ramped up cleaning and disinfecting of its facilities.
