On Saturday, President Joe Biden said that migrant families who were previously separated under the Trump administration deserve compensation for the way they were treated.

Biden mentioned that the dollar amount may have to be adjusted – the initial figure reported was a whopping $450k per family – but that compensation should still be forthcoming.

According to The Hill, Biden told the press:

"Now here’s the thing. If in fact because of the outrageous behavior of the last administration, you coming across the border, whether it was legal or illegal, and you lost your child."

Biden got more emphatic and animated as he continued, "You lost your child. It’s gone [sic]. You deserve some kind of compensation, no matter what the circumstance. What that will be, I have no idea."

In other words, when he said that $450k checks to families were "not going to happen" and that the reports of such were "garbage,"  he was referring to the dollar amount, not the fact that migrant families were not going to be compensated.

"If it saves taxpayer dollars and puts the disastrous history of the previous administration’s use of zero tolerance and family separation behind us, the president is perfectly comfortable with the Department of Justice settling with the individuals and families who are currently in litigation with the United States government," commented Karine Jean-Pierre, the Deputy Press Secretary of the White House.
