A poll conducted on May 3rd shows former President Donald Trump with a seven point lead over Joe Biden. The ABC/Washington Post poll had Trump at 49 percent and Biden sitting at 42 percent.

When asked who did a better job handling the economy as president, 53 percent said Trump and 36 percent said Biden.

58 percent of those who lean Democrat said they hope that the party nominates someone other than Biden to run. This is up from 52 percent from March.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis holds a similar lead over President Biden, with DeSantis at 48 percent and Biden at 41 percent.

For the Republican primary, DeSantis closed some of the gap on Donald Trump. The former president holds a 23 point lead, down from the 30 point lead he held in March.  Former Vice President Mike Pence is the next closest, receiving 2 percent of the vote.

Following his indictment for allegedly falsifying business records in New York, former President Trump surged in the polls when he doubled his lead from February to March. According to Republican pollster Daron Shaw, primary voters "view the case as politically motivated and it reanimates feelings that Trump is still fighting forces they see as corrupt and out of control."
