Conservative councillor Bert Chen has been suspended for two months after the party's national council objected to a petition he launched to oust O'Toole as leader.

Just hours after Erin O'Toole was defeated in the federal election, Bert Chen started a petition to recall him as leader. Chen, a representative on the Conservative Party of Canada's national council, claimed O'Toole had not lived up to conservatives' expectations.

"Erin O'Toole has BETRAYED the principles that the Conservative Party is founded on," the petition reads. "Erin O'Toole has BROKEN THE TRUST of the members of the Conservative Party. Erin O'Toole's campaign in the 2021 Federal Election FAILED in electing enough Conservative MPs to form a government."

At the time of writing, Chen's petition has garnered over 5,000 signatures.

The decision to suspend Chen was made by a vote of 10-7 in the 21-member national council, The Hill Times reports. Party president Rob Batherson noted that the vote was held following complaints made against Chen.

According to the Canadian Press, Chen wrote in a Facebook post that he sees his suspension as an attempt "to silence Conservative members that have lost confidence in the leadership of Erin O’Toole," adding that he would be back after his suspension to continue the fight.
