The Pentagon was placed on temporary lockdown after gunshots were fired just steps away from the entrance on Tuesday morning. One officer has been killed.

As the headquarters of the US military, the Pentagon has been the target of attacks in the past. Thus, when shots were heard just outside the entrance, authorities wasted no time in locking down.

Just after 11am EST, the Pentagon Force Protection Agency tweeted the news that an "incident" had occurred in the Pentagon Transit Center.

Just over an hour later, the PFPA announced that the lock down had been lifted, although the Metro entrance remained closed.

"It is still an active crime scene," the PFPA said, urging people to "stay away from the Metro rail entrance and bus platform area."

The Arlington County Fire Department declared that there were "multiple patients" at the scene. According to ABC News, a police officer has died after being stabbed during the "burst of violence" at the transit center.

The AP also noted Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and General Mark Milley were at the White House in a meeting with President Joe Biden when the shooting took place.
