Hero football player Tate Myre gave life to save classmates from Oxford High School shooter

A petition has been created to rename Oxford High School's football stadium in honor of a high school football player killed in Tuesday's shooting after it was revealed that he have attempted to disarm the shooter before being killed.

A petition has been created to rename Oxford High School's football stadium in honor of a high school football player killed in Tuesday's shooting after it was revealed that he have attempted to disarm the shooter before being killed.

16-year-old Tate Myre was one of three killed during Tuesday's shooting in Michigan. 17-year-old Madisyn Baldwin, and 14-year-old Hanna St. Julian were killed during the shooting as well.

"According to his fellow students, Myre, who played running back for the Oxford Wildcats football team, was shot while trying to disarm the shooter and later died from his injuries," Newsweek wrote.

A petition on Change.org was started just hours after the shooting, urging school staff to change the name of Wildcat Stadium to the Tate Myre stadium.

"…one of the students was killed in an attempt to disarm the shooter, this student is Tate Myre, Tate is not just a hero to his fellow students at Oxford high school but a legend, his act of bravery should be remembered forever and passed down through generations, he put his life in danger to try and help the thousands of other students at Oxford High School," the petition reads.

The petition has garnered nearly 70,000 signatures at the time of publishing.

Those that signed the petition expressed their support fir his surviving family, and thanked the teen for his selfless act.

"He's a hero and should be remembered that way," wrote Nanci Danker. "May his parents have a place to go to visit him."

"Because this young man is a hero, the world was a better place with him in it and he deserves to be remembered," wrote Collette Leahy.

"Tate Myre is the best of America who came to face with the worst of America and put his colleagues, fellow citizens and community before self. Please remember Tate Myre forever as an American hero," wrote Joe Kunzler.

Myre's football team also paid their respects in a tribute post on Twitter.

"It is with great grief that one of the victims of the tragic event at OHS today was one of our own, Tate Myre. Tate was on varsity since his freshman year and was an honor student. Tate was a great young man with a bright future and beloved by all. You will be missed, Tate," they wrote.

The teen, who had just finished his Junior year of football, was an accomplished player, being selected first team all region for tight end and linebacker.

His Twitter featured numerous highlight reals for recruiters, and according to Barstool Sports, he reportedly aspired to play at Michigan State University, Grand Valley State University, Wayne State University, or Texas A&M University.
