A recent poll by Gallup released on Monday shows a more than double-digit shift in party preferences at the US national level, shifting the balance in favor of the Republicans.

Gallup reports that, the last time they performed the same poll (in Q1 2021) the American public skewed nine percent in favor of the Democrats. This most recent poll, however, (in Q1 2021) shows that the Republicans are now favored by five percent.

"These results are based on aggregated data from all U.S. Gallup telephone surveys in 2021, which included interviews with more than 12,000 randomly sampled U.S. adults," states Gallup's website.

Respondents are asked if they identify as a Republican, a Democrat or an independent. If they respond that they are independents, they are then asked a follow-up question of whether they lean more towards one party or the other.

Gallup also mentioned that gaps of even five percent or more are "among the largest" appearing in their data, since they first started performing these surveys in the year 1991.

Significant advantages for the Republican party like this are also relatively rare in the history of this poll. In fact, the last time they had this strong an advantage was in early 1995.

Many are saying that the first year of the Biden administration has been disastrous, and that issues such as inflation, the border crisis and the administration's handling of the pandemic are big factors in the current surge of Republican popularity.
