The documents, compiled during Biden's decades in the United States Senate, were given to the university library as a gift, and though it is still unknown whether the collection contained classified material, the move was a sensitive enough matter for White House lawyers to get involved.
According to the Daily Mail, who obtained the information via files from Hunter's infamous laptop, Schwerin was assigned to handle the documents in 2009 after years of working with Hunter at Rosemont Seneca and taking care of Biden's taxes and personal affairs.
The move was completed on June 6, 2012, with the university noting that "more than 1,850 boxes of archival records from the President's Senate career arrived at the Library" that day.
Transporting all those documents required a fair amount of paperwork and oversight, most importantly a "Deed of Gift" that would give ownership to the university.
In response to a draft copy of the Deed whose terms were deemed "very favorable to the university," deupty counsel Katherine Oyama proposed adding a stipulation that the school would have to "comply with privacy laws, rules governing the handling of Committee records, classified information procedures, etc." Oyama did not specify whether the latter was necessary, or simply in place just in case classified material was discovered down the road.
"FYI," Schwerin wrote to Hunter in an email forwarding the Deed, "if you want to be in the loop. I sent to Mel who is going to talk to your Dad about this and decide who should work on it between him and Jamie." As the Daily Mail reports, "Mel" refers to Hunter and his Uncle Jim's tax guy, Melvyn Monzack.
These revelations come on the heels of numerous stashes of classified documents found in Biden's private residences and former offices.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz called on the DOJ and FBI "to examine all 1,850 boxes of those Senate records to see how many additional classified documents are in those records."
"The answer should be none," he added. "But given Biden’s pattern, we should have zero reason to have any confidence that there are not multiple classified documents within those 1,850 boxes of Senate records."
