"It's understandable that you're not going to be inclined to do or say things that might weaken that presumptive nominee against Trump."
Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff admitted during a recent podcast interview that Democrats downplayed Joe Biden’s cognitive and physical decline during the 2024 election in order to avoid weakening his candidacy against Donald Trump.
Ossoff made the comments on Pod Save America on Friday, where he was asked by host Tommy Vietor whether Democrats avoided an “honest conversation” about Biden’s age. Vietor noted that polling and focus groups consistently showed voters believed Biden was too old, saying, “ We just didn't listen to the mounds and mounds of data that was out there.”
Ossoff responded, “I think that like the most brutally honest answer to that question is, you know, when you're facing the specter of Donald Trump potentially being reelected to the presidency and you have in the sitting president the presumptive nominee, it's understandable that you're not going to be inclined to do or say things that might weaken that presumptive nominee against Trump, given the threat that he posed and poses.”
The clip was shared on X by the team of Republican Georgia Representative Mike Collins, who announced in July that he would be challenging Ossoff for the state’s Senate seat in the 2026 election. His war room account wrote, “Georgia, your Senator lied to you— because he cares more about Democrats having power than our state’s best interests.”
Collins continued by posting on his own account previous comments made by Ossoff last year, where he had described Biden as “sharp, focused, impressive, formidable, and effective.”
“Georgia’s Senator lied to all of us,” Collins added.
