Sweden recommends against COVID vaccination for children under 11

"With the knowledge we have today, with a low risk for serious disease for kids, we don't see any clear benefit with vaccinating them," Health Agency official Britta Bjorkholm said.

Swedish health officials announced on Thursday that they have decided against recommending COVID vaccines for children. The health agency said that the benefits did not outweigh the risks for those aged 5-11.

"With the knowledge we have today, with a low risk for serious disease for kids, we don't see any clear benefit with vaccinating them," Health Agency official Britta Bjorkholm said, according to Reuters.

The decision may be reassessed in the future, upon new research, or if a new variant comes along.

Children in high-risk groups are already eligible for vaccination.

Sweden's COVID response has been one that has garnered international attention. The healthcare system is not under serious strain, despite recording record cases yesterday.

Sweden currently has 101 COVID patients in intensive care, less than 25 percent of the patients it had in spring of 2021.

16,000 have died in Sweden, out of nearly 2 million cases.

Sweden also opted to extend restrictions on restaurants and on indoor venues, though they announced they were hopeful that they could remove measures on February 9.
