Toronto is one of the four cities being considered for an NFL expansion team. The other three are St. Louis, San Antonio, and even London in the United Kingdom.

According to ESPN, the NFL is considering expanding out of the United States, just as the NBA, NHL, and MLB have done before them. The only issue is that Canada already has its own football league in the CFL, however, this is significantly less popular than the NFL in the great white north.

"They're looking at what the options are, what the financial ramifications are, and what's in the best interest of the league, because it ultimately comes down to money," said one NFL analyst.

"The bottom line is the bottom line with the league," he added.

The cities "...that have been thrown up as potential expansion sites to begin with would be London, Toronto, San Antonio, and then possibly St Louis."

In London, the NFL recently built a stadium in a partnership with the Premier League team Tottenham Hotspur. Since it was opened, NFL games have been played in the United Kingdom.

The NFL used to have a similar arrangement with Toronto where NFL teams would play at the Rodger's Centre.

With nearly 6 million people in the Greater Toronto Area, Toronto stands as the 4th biggest city in North America, and potentially a solid source of income for the NFL.

This is significantly smaller than London, however, which has close to 10 million people. Intercontinental travel may be an impediment to a British NFL team.
