Justin Trudeau announced a mandate on Friday that travelers arriving from foreign countries must quarantine in hotels in an effort to curb the spread of coronavirus in the country, CP24 reports.

New arrivals will also be required to pay for their own hotel lodging without support or subsidy from the Canadian government.

The Trudeau Liberals are also reportedly going to mandate that new arrivals receive a coronavirus test upon entering the country, adding to the existing requirement that they receive a test within 72 hours of flying to Canada.

These measures come as Canada begins to see the spread of other, more infectious variants of coronavirus from countries such as the United Kingdom.

The government already requires that inbound travelers quarantine for 14 days upon arrival, but not necessarily in hotels.
